The book itself in 8 parts: Of the Land, Of the People, Of the Household, Travellers' tales, Of Doctors and Science, Of Beasts, Of Fears and Ghosts, Of Curses and Prayers. Dorothy Hartley was a social historian from Skipton in Yorkshire and is best known for her influential later book "Food in England" described by Delia Smith as "A classic book without a worthy successor – a must for any keen English Cook."
