Book Description
The Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection, or the preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life.
Sixth edition, thirty-seventh thousand, with additions and corrections. John Murray. London. 1889. Half-title, title, xxi, 458pp. Folding plate diagram by West, Newman & Co. Original publisher's green cloth, gilt to spine, blind tooled boards. Original endpapers. Bookseller's plate Matthews and Brooke Bradford and Leeds to fep. Neat signature of previous owner [Horace Render (1869-1923) of Wyre Hall, Adwalton] to endpapers in pencil and to half-title in ink. Occasional spotting/marks to the index. Some edge wear, a very nice copy.
The sixth edition was the last edition published during Darwin's lifetime, and the first edition in which he used the word "evolution". Darwin made extensive revisions to previous editions, dropped "On" from the title, and added a new chapter VII to address counter arguments, and renumbered subsequent chapters.
