Book Description
The Phantom Major (David Stirling - founder and leader of the SAS), Virginia Cowles, Collins, 1958, Signed, First Edition First Impression
The story of the man who first founded and led the SAS and the exploits of the original unit in the sands of Africa during the Second World War, more recently triumphed by the tv series SAS Rogue Heroes.
Under his leadership, the SAS carried out hit and run raids behind the Axis lines of the North African campaign. He saw active service until he was captured in January 1943. He spent the rest of the war in captivity, despite making several attempts to escape.
The book has been signed by David Stirling without dedication to a bookplate on the title page.
A signed (bookplate) First Edition, First Impression in very good condition. The binding is straight and tight, the boards clean and the lettering on the spine bright. The unclipped dust jacket, protected in a clear, removable cover is in very good condition with a brightly coloured front cover, some light foxing, a small hole to the rear and the slightest nibbling in a couple of places but overall a very good example.
