Book Description

Folio. Pictorial title, and 19 (of 25; but with one not listed, making 20) lithographed plates, additionally also FIVE MOUNTED AND IN EXCELLENT CONTEMPORARY HAND COLOURING. Publishers morocco, gutta purcha perished, contents loose and disbound. Text and plates rather foxed. SUBSCRIBERS copy, with a receipt for five guineas four pasted to front endpaper to John le SUEUR, dated 6th July 1847, and signed by the publisher. A FINE ASSOCIATION. Le Sueur was apparently a Jersey admirer of Capelain, attempting to set up a gallery devoted to Capelain after the artist s untimely death in 1848. Also loosely inserted is a mezzotint portrait by Bellin after Lucas of Sir Thomas Le Breton, Bailly of the Island of Jersey, President of the States &c. The contents in more detail are as follows: 1) Lithographed title page, The Queen s Visit to Jersey, September 3rd, 1846. Published by Philip Falle. 2) Dedication to her Majesty. 3) Text leaf (two sides). 4) List of plates (two sides). The lithographed plates are as follows: Arrival of the Royal Squadron; Landing of her most Gracious Majesty; Re-Embarkation of Her Majesty; Departure of her Majesty; Town and Harbour of St Hilliers; Hermitage; Portelet Bay; St Brelades Church; St Brelades Bay; Corbiere Rocks; St Owens Bay; Plemont; Bonne Nuit Harbour; Bouley Bay; Rozel Bay; St Catherine's Bay; Anne Port; Mount Orgeuil 1; Mount Orgeuil 2; Mount Orgeuil 3 (extra view, not listed). The extra hand-coloured plates are as follows: 5. Re-Embarkation of her Majesty. 6. Departure of the Royal Squadron 7. Town and Harbour of St Hilliers. 9. St Aubin s Bay. 20. Rozel Bay. The mounts to the hand-coloured plates are chipped and brittle, as the mount paper has become somewhat acidic. Abbey (Scenery 553) notes that a few subscribers copies were supplied with some hand-coloured images mounted separately, as in this one. Please note that of the basic set of plates (ignoring the hand-coloured ones) there are 19 of the 25 only, plus the extra view of Mount Orgeuil. It is a pity that the remaining six plates are not present from the original set, but one of those missing is represented in the hand-coloured ones (St Aubin s Bay), and there is the extra view of Mount Orgeuil. Please note faults. Priced accordingly. Extra photos sent upon request!.
