Book Description

Reprinted from The Cambridge Magazine for April 29, 1916 and sold by W. Heffer & Sons Ltd., Cambridge in May 1916. The First separate edition of this early anti-war poem. The BOOKLET is In near Fine condition. pp. 4. Original white wrapper, printed in black. This copy with some light creasing where it has been folded twice. The first of the three very scarce Sassoon numbers in the seven 'Reprints from the Cambridge Magazine' series. Keynes noted that these reprints were produced ‘mostly commemorating the sacrifice made by the young men killed in the First World War. Their production was arranged by A. T. Bartholomew and from notes made by him, it seems probable that only 200 or 250 copies of each reprint were made’. The Cambridge Magazine, edited by C. K. Ogden, was markedly anti-militaristic, and the publication of this grim war poem notably precedes Sassoon's notorious pacifist ‘Soldier's Declaration’ in 1917. (Keynes A13). The booklet is protected in an archival folder. Very scarce
