THE WORKS OF MR. FRANCIS RABELAIS. ---With original Artwork. Doctor in Physick. Containing five books of the lives, heroic deeds and sayings of Gargantua and his sonne Pantagruel. NEW EDITION of this work which was first published by Grant Richards in 1904. Two Volumes. 8vo. (9.1 x 6.2 inches). With original pen and ink artwork from the First Edition and reproduced in this edition, on stiff white card, for vignette on page 16 of volume one, initialled under the drawing and with pencilled measurement for the image in the original 1904 edition and the words "Copyright Reserved" written on the bottom of the card. The books are Illustrated with 2 half tone frontispieces, 98 full page mono plates plus 138 smaller vignettes and grotesque heads throughout the text. A fine set in highly attractive mid twentieth century leather bindings of full red morocco. Spines with raised bands. Compartments ruled and lettered in gilt. Blind ruled borders on boards. Top edges gilt, other untrimmed. Marbled endpapers. Gilt inner dentelles. A fine set of this wonderfully illustrated edition. The books are undated but Geofrey Beare's bibliography of W. Heath Robinson dates this edition to 1921 and is a smaller version of the magnificent large format 1904 Grant Richards edition. (Beare #35d). The original ink drawing shows a half Human, half Fawn character draped over a Beer Stein. The image measures about 5.5 x 4 inches and is initial by W. H. R underneath. The whole card measures 12.3 x 9.6 inches and is framed in a glass fronted clip frame.
