Reprinted from the original edition of 1822-24 with some additional material and an introduction by the British social anthropologist Isaac Schapera (1905-2003). William John Burchell (1781-1863) was an English explorer, naturalist, traveller, artist, and author. He arrived in South Africa in 1810 leaving Cape Town in June 1811. While exploring South Africa, he travelled 7000 km over unexplored terrain, collecting over 50,000 natural history specimens. This journey is documented in this publication. Cat No.: 57715
