Book Description

A Manual of the Land and Freshwater Shells of the British Islands, William Turton, pub. Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green 1831 1st ed. Octavo. 10 coloured plates, including frontispiece. The plates bound to rear with tissue guards. Internally good, spot of browning to text page opposite first page of illustrations of shells. Formerly the copy of Joseph Hancock [1823-1910] Keeper of the Hancock Museum, Newcastle with his ownership inscription dated 1858 to half title and a bookplate to pastedown 'Joseph Wright Bequest 1922'. The book with stamp of the Newcastle Natural History Soc. of Northumberland, Durham and Newcastle on Tyne to front free endpaper and small ticket to title page. Original green, satin finish cloth, few insignificant marks with paper label, a little soiled to spine. Lighter patch to foot of spine, where, presumably a library number removed? All in all, a very nice copy of this title in the original cloth with the added attraction of the local provenance. A further name 'Thos. H Long' to title page.
