War and Peace (3 Vols)- I. Before Tilsit, II. The Invasion, III. The French at Moscow
Book Description
Volumes I & III are 2nd states of the 3rd Vizetelly Edition published [1889] at Henrietta Street. Volume II is the 4th Edition published in 1888 at Catherine Street, The Strand. 12.3 x 19cm brown decorative paper coverd boards, all rebacked with original spines laid down. Yellow coated endpapers; Volume I vii[i] 429[1]pp, Volume II 360pp; Volume III 387[1].
The delicate bindings are in a much better state than is usually found with most of the spines having been preserved. There is some rubbing to the edges and the War and Peace title on the spines is very faded but the titles of each individual volume on the front covers is clear and bright. The binding is firm. Internally there is a gift inscription on the front free endpaper of each volume,’ R. G. Bury from B. L. May 1898'. There is a little, very light spotting to the margins first few and last few pages of each volume. All in all a surprisingly well preserved Vizetelly set. We were not previously aware of and can find no other examples of a 1888 4th edition printed at Catherine Street, before the company moved to Henrietta Street in June of 1888 and the younger Vizetelly reprinted the 2nd and 3rd Editions in 1889.
