White’s Plane Globe
Book Description
White’s Plane Globe published by W White Sheffield 1839. Drawn and engraved by J H Franks of Sheffield. Two illustrated boards, each with a hemisphere in colour, bound as a book with the maps inside. Size 26 by 26 cm. The complete title is White’s Plane Spherical Globe. The inner pages have maps of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres complete with brass measuring strips. The west coast of the USA is termed New Albion, Tasmania is still Van Dieman’s Land and much of central and southern Africa remains unexplored. Each map can be rotated 360 degrees around its strip. A series of diagrams and sketch maps surrounds each hemisphere showing the transit of Venus; the eclipses of the sun and the moon; the orbit of the earth; the signs of the zodiac etc. The maps have been treated with a contemporary form of varnish- presumably to protect them from the brass axis and from wear. Some limited clear staining which does not affect the maps and a recent replacement leather spine. Good to VG condition.
