Women: Their Condition and Influence in Society, in 3 volumes
Book Description
First published in Paris in 1803 as 'Les Femmes, leur Condition et leur Influence dans l'Ordre Social', this is the first English translation and was published in the same year, 1803. Segur writes in his preface 'The design of my work is to demonstrate the equality of the two sexes, different as they may be; and to prove that everything is compensated between them'. His conclusion is' I think I have proved, by a variety of facts, and by several striking approximations, that in whatever point of view they are considered, women are not inferior to men'.
Dealer Notes
Joseph Alexander Pierre Segur (1756-1805) was a French poet, songwriter and playwright. He was the son of his father's best friend, and he too had many children out of wedlock. He gave them all his name and financed their education. His great liking and respect for women is very clear in this work.
