Works of Henry James.
Book Description
The Portrait of a Lady (3 vols); Roderick Hudson (2 vols); The American (2 vols); Washington Square; The Europeans; Confidence; The Siege of London; An International Episode; Daisy Miller (with Four Meetings, Longstaff’s Marriage, Benvolio); The Madonna of the Future (with A Bundle of Letters, The Diary of a Man of Fifty, Eugene Pickering).
Dealer Notes
This edition includes Washington Square, The Europeans and Confidence, all of which were excluded by James from the New York Edition. Most volumes are dated 1883, except Washington Square (1886) and Daisy Miller (1887) both of which form the second half of their respective volumes, so the set was bound some time during 1887 or soon afterwards. The bibliography by Edel and Laurence (see A20) refers to a pocket edition of which all volumes are dated 1886 or 1887. It also mentions a reported 1883 issue, bound two volumes to one, with publisher’s devices to the covers. These devices are not present here and the dates don’t match. Presumably this edition was unseen by the bibliographers. Scarce.
