From the beginning of the Dardanelles campaign to the battle of Verdun -- Vol. III. From the battle of Verdun to the third battle of Ypres -- Vol. IV. From Caporetto to the armistice. FIRST PRINTING OF THIS EDITION. Four 8vo Volumes - Complete. (9 x 6.2 inches). Illustrated throughout with 78 folding maps and plans, many quite large. One map has had a neat repair to the blank fold, not affecting the map image, and a couple have small closed tears where they have been opened out incorrectly. Some offsetting to the blank endpapers from the dustwrappers but overall the books are in lovely clean condition throughout. The set is mostly unread with several page gatherings still unopened. Publishers blue cloth bindings with gilt lettering and ruled lines to the spines. Gilt stamped decorative JB monogram to the front boards. In the rare original dustwrappers. Plain brown paper wrappers with black lettering to the spines and front panels. A large pert of the spine of volume one is missing and there is some minor chipping to the edges of the other wrappers but this is a scarce set in any condition and with all four dustwrappers present is rare. This detailed work also contains an appendix of the terms of the Armisice. An index of Naval and Military units, and a general index. The work is dedicated to Thomas Arthur nelson, the publisher who signed John Buchan to his firm in 1906, who died in combat at Arras on Easter Monday 1917. The Author's preface states; "This work in its original form appeared in twenty-four volumes between February 1915 and July 1919.... After much reflection I decided to revise - and largely rewrite - the book in order to give it perspective and a juster scale, and I was moved to this decision by my view of the value of contemporary history"
