Smith travelled in China soon after the country had been opened up to foreign trade following the Opium Wars. His visits to the Treaty Ports of Canton, Shanghai, Ningopo, Foo-Choo and Amoy offer an early record of the cities at this time, and his account also includes details of the visit to Hong Kong.
