Dealer Notes
the original grisaille artwork for the illustration by Woodforde (1763-1817) for William Shakespeare’s Henry VI Part II, act IV, scene X, depicting the line ‘Hence will I drag thee headlong by the heels’, where the Kentish gentleman, Alexander Iden, has just killed Jack Cade, the rebel leader he has caught in his garden, who had sparked a revolt in support of Edward, Duke of York, resulting in his briefly becoming the Mayor of London before being ousted by Lord Clifford and forced to flee. The final composition was engraved by James Fittler for Longman’s 1806 edition of the play, and later wood-engraved by John Thompson for a subsequent 19th century edition
