Book Description

THE BAILIFF’S HANDBOOK LICHFIELD The Charter of the City of Lichfield [with] Index, notes and “The Boundaryes of the City of Lichfield.” Lichfield: Manuscript, 1745. Square 8vo. Half sheep, broken and partially disbound. Seemingly prepared for William Bond, whose signature it bears on the front pastedown. He is presumed to be one of the bailiffs, or burgesses of the City of Lichfield, with a note on the final blank regarding his “Expenses that attended my coming into ye Corporation.” The first part [13 pages], is a copy of a 1641 declaration by John Burnes and James Allen and the “one and twenty Brethren of the Incorporation of the said City” on the orderly running of the City. There follows an index to the Charter [7 pages] with references to Fairs, Bye-Laws, the administration of Judges, Sherriffs, Courts, Clerks, Serjeants, etc.; the Charter [47 pages] with marginal notes on its actions and meanings. The final 4 pages of text is a description of the boundaries of the City, which may have been required for “Beating the Bounds.”
Dealer Notes
An unusual manuscript which may have been presented to all newly elected bailiffs of the city. I have been unable to trace a similar example. It is presumed that the documents, whilst not published, are available in local archives.
