Etched from a sketch by A. Cooper. Born to a saddler in Newmarket, Frank Buckle (1766-1832) rose to be the leading jockey of the first quarter of the 19th century, and was known as “the Governor.” He was famesd for bringing respectability to horse racing, and for winning 27 British Classic Races – a record that stood for 150 years.
