Souttar presented these books to The British Medical Association Library. Two Volumes, Small 4to. Vol I - KALA-AZAR, ITS CHEMOTHERAPY University of Calcutta 1940 xx, 416pp. Tissue guarded frontispiece, colour and b&w illustrations. Vol II - MALARIA, HAEMOLYSIS AND OTHER SUBJECTS University of Calcutta 1941 xviii, pp463-808; b&w illustrations. Bound in original red cloth with Gilt lettering to spines & university of Calcutta insignia blind stamps on front boards. British Medical Association Library Stamps to both volumes. Text in very good condition, no loose pages. Scarce 2 Volume set, with an important provenance.
Dealer Notes
Sir Upendranath Brahmachari (1873-1946) was an Indian Scientist and a leading medical practitioner of his time. His discoveries in the treatment of Kala-azar led to the saving of thousands of lives in India.

Brahmachari played an important part in the formation of the world’s second Blood Bank in Kolkata in 1939. He was the first Indian to become the Chairman of the Managing Body of the Indian Red Cross Society.

For his achievements, he received many awards & was conferred a Knighthood by the British Government (1934). He was a nominee for the Nobel Prize in 1929 in the category of Physiology and Medicine. A street in Kolkata is named in his honour.
