[Hastings] The Five Nations
Book Description
Octavo. First edition. pp xi, [2], 215, edges uncut, top edge gilt, occasional foxing. In a PAINTED VELLUM BINDING, with VIV marked out within a floral design with birds and peacocks, with marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplate of Hastings to verso of flyleaf, with the motto Justitiae Tenax. One would expect a vellum binding such as this to be Italian, from Florence, (also from the endpapers), though there is no binder s label. However, the supposition is reinforced by the Hastings family bookplate: Lord Hastings was Chairman of the British School in Florence throughout much of the twentieth century, and decorated by the Italian government for his services to culture and art.
