Hinges starting and top endpaper split at hinge; top and tail of spine and shoulders little rubbed but internally clean and binding tight. Previous owner s signature on verso of half-title. In the Prefatory Note the editor explains that the extended supplement in this edition is in response to …the recent strides of Natural History Science , which has brought to light a multitude of novel and important facts, since the last edition, notably on the re-discovery of that huge, living, anthropomorphous ape, the Gorilla… and also, …the great variety of extinct monsters, whose skeletal remains have been investigated by the devoted cultivars of palæontological research.
