Italy, by Lady Morgan. In two volumes.
Book Description
Quarto. First edition. 2 Volumes. 4to. Vol 1: pp. [iii]-xi, [i], 356, [1]; Vol 2: 1 p.l., [iii]-ix, [i], 484. Half-titles and ad leaves not present, otherwise collated complete and correct. Contemporary half calf on marbled boards, matching marbled endpapers present, edges marbled, early reback, original spines relaid, slightly rubbed to head and foot, some foxing on first and last pages, overall nice examples with bright text. Small armorial bookplate of Edward Treacher (surgeonauthor of In The Kingdom of the Shah) to each front pastedown with the motto Je vis en espoir. A nice example of rather an important work of early women travel literature, one that is well-written and rather open perhaps in its criticism of poverty, and overt comments on the Pope and Catholic Church.
