Joao Rodrigues was born in Portugal around 1591 & reached Japan in 1577. He became a fluent speaker of Japanese and was involved in commercial & political activities as well as spokesman for the missionary community until his eventual expulsion in 1610. This volume covers an assessment of his contribution and a translation of his two books on Japanese life & culture.
