First editions. Quarto. First journey: pp xvi (-[i-ii), 438. Bound without half-title, and the list of plates which follows the introduction (as often). Folding map frontispiece, and 28 further attractive plates, showing coastal views, antiquities, map of Tehran, Persian on horseback, route back to Amasya, and so on. Second journey: pp xix (i) (-i-ii). Half-title not bound in. Frontis, and eighteen further plates, as listed, including four hand-coloured, and 47 illustrations to text (Sculptured rock at Shapor bound opposite page 50). Bound in attractive uniform near-contemporary half-calf on marbled boards, contrasting labels, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplate of S E Widdrington, Newton Hall to front paste-down of both volumes. A most attractive set.
