[LATE NINETEENTH-CENTURY SCOTTISH CYCLING SCRAPBOOK] BOOK OF CYCLING: Extracts from daily papers & cycling papers.
Book Description
Folio (38.5 x 29cm). Contemporary quarter leather over diced cloth boards. Manuscript ink title page: “Book of Cycling / by / C. E. Coventry. / 25th July 1893 / Extracts from daily papers & cycling papers”. The contents comprising 98pp. of cuttings from various late nineteenth-century cycling periodicals, the great majority with black and white illustrations of bicycles or cycling scenes, some annotated in pencil, plus a small handful of cuttings concerning rowing and 2pp. of chromolithographic scenes of Edinburgh towards the rear (the album being completely full bar one page). The binding remains firm with rubbing to the spine and joints and with wear to the corners. The contents with a couple of pages preceding the title page apparently removed (perhaps indicating the original repurposing of the album by Coventry), toning, scattered foxing, and old glue marks are otherwise in good order.
Dealer Notes
A visually appealing scrapbook created by a cycling enthusiast during the 1890s. Many of the cuttings relate to Scottish cycling, particularly Edinburgh, making this its creator’s most likely residence.
