Letter re Traitor's Gate
Book Description
A manuscript signed letter from Dennis Wheatley dated 1st January 1957 thanking “the Brigadier” [Brigadier L F E Wieler] for showing him around Traitor’s Gate at St Thomas’ Tower for research into his planned next book.
‘My Dear Brigadier,
This is just a line to say how very gratefull (sic) I am to you for having taken me round the Tower yourself last Thursday and for making my visit such a pleasant one.
St Thomas’ Tower, will I am sure, ‘fit the bill’ as far as my book is concerned; and I feel now, thanks to you, that I shall be able to make the escape part of my story plausible.
I may, after all, call the book ‘Traitor’s Gate’, as the Wallace book was published many years ago and there is no copyright in titles. (Two of my own have been used by other people only last year). I am all against duplication in the ordinary way, but in this case the title would be so sensible. I’ll have to think about it.
Should you and your wife be coming down into Hampshire at any time, do let me know and come to lunch with us.
In the meantime every good wish to you and yours for 1957.
Yours very sincerely
Dennis Wheatley.’
A interesting letter providing excellent background information on the book that would be published some 18 months later.
