London and North Western Railway: Bolton and Chorley area of Lancashire- maps, plans and documents 1839-1845
Book Description
London and North Western Railway: Bolton and Chorley area of Lancashire- maps, plans and documents 1839-1845. A record of land agreements and rents payable by the company to a range of local landowners in a small folio, size 33 by 21 cm. 36 pages. There are 18 pages of text that take the form of legal agreements relating to rents that contain the names of the parties involved, the size of their land holdings and detailed descriptions of these plots. Each has a separate map or plan on linen or draftsman’s paper tipped into the book that shows the land in question, with names, rents, size of land rented by the company etc., all hand-drawn, coloured and annotated in considerable detail. The whole document seems to have been collated, typed up and indexed later, probably in the early twentieth century. There is a sheet of company paper dated 1919 loosely inserted in the text which has pencil notes that might have been prepared prior to rail re-organisation. The maps and plans with the annotations and comments on them date from the 1839-45 period and the typed notes that form the 18 pages of text date from 1919 when they would appear to have been collated in the book. Bound in stiff marbled boards with a L&NW Railway bookplate to the front. VG condition
