Book Description

A Three Page Original First Hand Account of Sub-Lieutenant C. E. Polden’s involvement in “Operation Corkscrew”, which was the codename for the Allied invasion of the Italian island of Pantelleria (between Sicily and Tunisia) on 11 June 1943, prior to the Allied invasion of Sicily, during the Second World War. He opens with the line We can now give you an account of recent operations, and as you have probably guessed, I was in the Pantellaria “do”. Dated 2nd August 1943, just a couple of months after the event, this is a very interesting original three page typed account of the Sub-Lieutenants involvement in “Operation Corkscrew”, he was involved in operating one of the landing craft, and recalls in detail the approach to the harbour and being under attack from enemy fighter bombers, and the close call of having to dock only feet away from an unexploded bomb, he is very frank in admitting how scared he was during the operation.
