Medal to Commemorate the Opening of the Cabot Tower, Bristol on 6 September 1898
Book Description
A circular silver medal, 1.5" in diameter, with the tower on one side and 'The Cabot Tower Bristol opened 6 Sep 1898 by the Marquess of Dufferin' on the other. In very good condition, pierced at the top, we believe as issued.
Dealer Notes
A rare medal (BHM 3636), with our research revealing only one example being sold at auction in the last 25 years. We have never seen one before. The Cabot Tower was built to commemorate the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's discovery of Newfoundland. In his time the Marquess of Dufferin had been Governor General of Canada and Viceroy of India - he had laid the Tower's foundation stone in June 897 and returned in September 1898 to open the Tower.
