Book Description

First edition. 23 x 18 cm. 58 pp. (4). Sempe’s ‘everyman’, Monsieur Lambert, captured the hearts and imaginations of people at home and abroad by way of the author’s sympathetic portrait of day-to-day Parisian life. This copy has a signed birthday dedication with an original sketch. The recipient is believed to be M(ar)ia Milstein, the daughter of concert violinist, Nathan Milstein (1903-1992) who kept a home in Paris. A pencilled note to FEP assigns the dedication to ‘Mrs. Nathan Milstein’. The Milstein provenance is clear, the attribution less so, though Maria seems a likely candidate for the diminutive ‘Mia’.
