New Buildings on Bloomsbury site
Book Description
Unpaginated. Frontis, title page + 2pp text, 3 plates + map. Royal 8vo. Paper covered boards designed by Paul Nash. Images include prints of Holden’s original model, featuring his ‘spinal scheme’ for the Bloomsbury campus, 1932. University of London Collection, Senate House Library. Scarce. Following Lutyen’s scheme for the site, [ RIBA Drawings Collection] Charles Holden was appointed to build the scheme. He had already built or redesigned no fewer than 48 Tube stations as well as the network’s monumental headquarters at 55 Broadway—which looks in retrospect like Senate House’s smaller sister—that persuaded Deller, the University Principal, & William Beveridge as Vice-Chancellor to hire him as architect for the project, construction of which would take more than 25 years. Hard to find.
