Dealer Notes
Based on first-hand observation during a stay in the South, Bostonian attorney, historian, philosopher, novelist and anti-slavery activist Richard Hildreth (1807-1865) wrote what is considered America’s first abolitionist novel and, according to Charles Nichols*, the source for Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1851-52), i.e. "The slave; or, memoirs of Archie Moore" (1836). Shortly after the appearance of H.B. Stowe’s novel in 1852, R. Hildreth issued an expanded version of his 1836 novel under the new title "The White Slave; or, memoirs of a fugitive" (1852).
--In "The White Slave" Hildreth included a new chapter in the wake of the passage of the 1850 Fugitive Slave Law, penning a scathing and detailed description of one fictional commissioner’s operation.-- (Cooper Wingert, Richard Hildreth’s Atrocious Judges [2019]).
A widely translated novel, the Da Cunha Portuguese adaptation is rare.
