Albumen carte-de-visite portrait of George Macdonald (1824-1905), poet and novelist, pioneering figure in the field of modern fantasy literature and mentor of fellow-writer Lewis Carroll. Ink inscriptions on back: “Geo. Macdonald” and “J.S.W.(?) called July 20, 1871” "Elliott & Fry, 55 Baker Street, Portman Square. W." printed on verso. Elliott & Fry was a Victorian photography studio founded in 1863 by Joseph John Elliott (1835-1903) and Clarence Edmund Fry (1840-1897).
