Book Description

The First UK printing published by Secker & Warburg, London in 1942. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Original black cloth with striking red lettering to the spine. Light pushing at the spine tips with some light markings to the boards but unobtrusive. A faint small erasure mark of a previous pencilled price to the upper corner of the front blank-end paper. Internally clean. The very scarce WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. A few minor nicks and a hint of rubbing at the extremities. Light toning to the spine with slight fading of colouring of the red star. The John Banting wrapper artwork looks very striking in the the removable Brodart archival cover. The Publisher's blurb proposes the author to be 'the only British woman to visit Russia in 1941.....this well known special correspondent gives an absorbing account of the Russian people's struggle against the invader. Based on a four months' visit last autumn to Moscow and the Front'. The undertaking led to her eventual disillusionment with Communism and she left the Party on her return to the UK. A decision which precipitated the end of her marriage to J.B.S. Haldane (the acclaimed scientist and one of the founders of new-Darwinism), who remained a member. Complete with the 16 photographic plates. A sharp copy of a very scarce title which rarely appears in commerce.
