Red half-leather binding in English calf. "These are printed on linen paper, in royal octavo size, with proofs on Japan paper of the full-page illustrations, and decorative borders in gold and colors.." The books are in very good condition except some miniscule rubbing to the edges of the boards and some slightly bumping to the corners. Top edges of text blocks in gilt, other edges are rough. Slight cracking to front inner hindge of vol. 1, fep and ffep are a little loosened. Binding of both volumes otherwise strong and tide. Small exlibris of former owner on ffeps. Pages inside are bright and clean. Washington Irving was the first American literary artist to earn his living solely through his writings and is considered to be the Father of the American Short Story. This is a two-volume collection of essays and short stories composed by Washington Irving while he was living in Europe, primarily in Germany and Paris. The collection was first published in 1824 under Irving's pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon.
