Book Description
The Sole UK Printing published by The Pear Tree Press in 1937. Number 67 of only 250 copies printed. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Original plum coloured cloth with gilt design and titling on the upper cover. Top edges rough-trimmed. Pale green silk place-mark still present. Corners slightly bumped. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. Guthrie design to upper panel. Spine slightly sunned with very slight edge-wear and dustiness. A few small closed tears to the folds. The wrapper looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. A presentation copy of this wonderful book, from John Freeman (James Guthrie's printing partner) to Seamus O'Sullivan Esq., editor of 'The Dublin Magazine', on Pear Tree Press headed notepaper, dated 'Nov.26 /37'. In this one page letter Freeman notes his enclosure of copy for a half page advert to be included in the Jan-March issue of the magazine, adding 'I have sent under separate cover a copy of our recent publication ' To The Memory Of Edward Thomas', in case you should wish to review it in the Magazine. Yours faithfully, Pear Tree Press John Freeman'. The letter is folded twice with two small pieces of GPO paper on the verso. This book is from the library of Alan Anderson of 'The Tragara press', with his small personal bookplate to the front pastedown. This title is one of the highlights of The Pear Tree Press being a tribute to the poet, Edward Thomas who was killed in WW1. It includes the famous frontispiece portrait of Thomas by James Guthrie's son. Accompanied by various Pear Tree Press ephemera: 'A Circular of books finished and in the naming at The Pear Tree Press' which includes details of this title ( moderately spotted), a small hand printed Press decorated slip (fine condition) and a small printed pamphlet describing the Pear Tree Press ( in fine condition). Scarce with such attributes.
