Nicol was a Scottish geologist and mineralogist whose studies of the rock formations of the Southern Uplands laid some of the groundwork for modern studies of the area. During the last 25+ years of his academic career he was professor of natural history at the University of Aberdeen, during which time he published several works on the geology and mineralogy of his homeland.
