An original ice axe, approx. 80 cm. long, 28 cm. wide at the top, 4 cm. wide shaft, metal head and ferrule, wood shaft; the metal slightly rusty and pitted, but overall in good condition. Boldly signed in ink to the shaft ‘Kurt Diemberger’.

Diemberger (b. 1932), the Austrian mountaineer, is one of the few to have made the first ascent of two 8000+m peaks - Broad Peak in 1957 with Hermann Buhl, and Dhaulagiri in 1960 with Peter Diener, Ernst Forrer, Albin Schelbert,Nyima Dorje Sherpa and Nawang Dorje Sherpa.
