Book Description

First Edition. The Banbury Cross Series. Light green cloth covers with extensive gilt design and lettering to the upper board and gilt lettering to the spine. Green decorative endpapers by R. Anning Bell. Title page, frontispiece and illustrations by Alice B. Woodward, in black and white, depicting sweet children and quaint, idyllic scenes, a wonderful match for these timeless poems. Top edge gilt, rough page edges and remnants of red silk ribbon ties. Looking a little tired with some rubbing and bumping to corners, light marks to boards, slight fading to the spine and edges and lacking most of silk ties as seen in photos. Browning to endpapers and very light offsetting to illustrations otherwise in very good condition with clean pages. With all that mentioned still a lovely and charming little book. 63pp. The Banbury Cross Series was a collection of 12 volumes of books edited by Grace Rhys and published in London by Dent in the 1890s. Alice B. Woodward was one of the most prolific illustrators at the turn of the 20th century and is known mainly for her work in children's literature including Peter Pan and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
