Two volumes of this seminal work by Thomas Hardy and scarce to find in such good condition. One of an edition of 1,000 copies published in 1874. Far From The Madding Crowd gave name to his fictional Wessex and remains one of the most sought after edition of all of Hardy's fourteen novels. The volumes contain twelve wood engraved illustrations by Helen Paterson including the frontpiece. Original green diagonal fine ribbed cloth. Gilt lettering and with two vignettes in black on the upper covers. Volume II has a cropped title page at the bottom edge and the book has been rehinged. Volume have lightly split hinges and appear rebound. Recent bookplates on the front free pages. The contents are generally clean. (Purdy p13-14) 8vo 342, 333pp.
