Fine Italianate pen and ink drawing
Book Description
A very attractive small pen and ink drawing, approximately 10.4cm x 6.7cm, slightly foxed but otherwise in good condition. The drawing shows in extra-ordinary detail a chateau, with sculptured terraces, hills behind and trees in the foreground. Indeed, it is so finely drawn, that much of the detail only becomes clear if the image is expanded. Several figures are walking in the gardens amongst life-size sculptures, and there are covered arboreal arches along the terrace. There is no signature. T. Allom 1804-1872 is written on the rear.
Dealer Notes
It is, obviously, extremely difficult to be sure who the artist was, but the attribution to Allom is at the least plausible: the quality of the drawing, the distinctiveness of the Italianate landscape, the clarity of the figures and detail, the delicate trees, and the clear confident verticals and the harmonious composition all are strongly reminiscent of his work.
