Book Description

Four British Navy Etchings signed by W Wyllie. These illustrate the poem Our Fathers: To the Memory of the Nameless Killed and Wounded by Captain Ronald A Hopwood RN. The four, all signed in pencil by Wyllie (1851-1931), seem to have been produced during the First World War as part of a fund-raising initiative. The Imperial War Museum has the date of both the poem and the etchings as 1913, and the images of dreadnoughts and seaplanes that Wyllie utilises to illustrate the poem would seem to confirm this. Other images are more traditional, showing the evolution of the Navy from sail to steam. Each 43 by 32 cm. mounted, with the actual image size 40 by 29 cm. Offered with a receipt from a London gallery where they were mounted and framed in 1978. VG condition.
