Ghost Stories of an Antiquary
Book Description
First edition second printing 1905. Hardback book is tight and clean with the barest hint of lean. Boards in hessian type cloth clean, with little evidence of wear or handling There is a tiny 3mm rub towards the lower fore edge corner. Joints and joint ends unrubbed, except for a 2mm rub to head of the rear joint. Very minor bump to foot of spine, that also has a touch of toning. Front panel and spine black titles remain bold and clean, as does the red ruling. Text block clean, with expected toning to edges, top edge has some dustiness. The pages are crisp and unblemished, with the very occasional spot. The front paste down has a contemporary book plate in the name of Alan Evans. The FEP has offset toning and neat previous owners name in black ink. This volume has nice strong hinges, and feels very nice in the hand. There are four illustrations by James McBryde as listed on the illustrations page, all of which are in lovely condition, and the Frontispiece has the tissue guard, which is unmarked, with no tears or creasing. A very clean and solid example of this collectible title, this being the second printing from 1905. The first and most sought after collection of James's ghost stories, featuring the contents as follows: Preface by M. R. James; Canon Alberic's Scrap-Book; Lost Hearts; The Mezzotint; The Ash-Tree; Number 13; Count Magnus; 'Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad'; The Treasure of Abbot Thomas. This is a super looking copy that appears, to us, to be one of the best currently available. An early printing that would be a highlight in any collection.
