The title gives the route as follows: 'The Route being From Paris, through Lyons, to Marseilles, and thence to Nice, Genoa, Pisa, Florence, Rome, Naples, and Mount Vesuvius; and by Rome, Terni, Perugia, Arezzo, Florence, Bologna, Ferrara, Padua, Venice, Verona, Milan, ove the Alps by Mount St. Bernard, Geneva, and the Jura, back into France.' James Paul Cobbett (1803-1881) was the son of the famous English reformer William Cobbett. Building on the experience of gentlemen undertaking the grand tour, this work is an example of a tour undertaken during 'the important transition period in the development of a more formalized tourist industry'. (J. Towner, 1985, 'The grand tour: A key phase in the history of tourism'). [40371]
