Dealer Notes
"The Gun Trick: this feat excited much wonder. The idea of a man catching between his teeth a bullet fired from a gun does seem extraordinary; however, it is exceedingly simple, although I would not advise my young friends to practice it — be content with knowing how it is accomplished".
This fascinating booklet from the middle of the 19th century lifts the lid on magic, illusion and ventriloquism at that time. Written by a Mr. Charles Sinclair, it is dedicated to the 'boys of England', and includes detailed descriptions of a multitude of tricks.
A somewhat mysterious and rare item, no trace of this small booklet (c.1855) exists online, although the Bodleian in Oxford holds two playbills with this title.
