Dealer Notes
This collection of letters and inventories is a fascinating archive that offers a snapshot of the Macclesfield Museum in Cheshire in the years 1914/15, but also more broadly of the art world in Britain at the beginning of the First World War. There is a letter concerning museum insurance, an inventory of paintings in the Museum's collection worth over £100 — including works by Rosa Bonheur, Augustus John, Gwen John and Walter Sickert — a list of watercolours lent by the Contemporary Art Society London and a copy of the full correspondence "between Messrs. Blunt & Brocklehurst and the Union Assurance Society". In short, an instructive and unique collection with broad appeal.
