MANUSCRIPT HISTORY OF WEST BUTTERWICK [LINCOLNSHIRE]
Book Description
SYDNEY MORLE History of West Butterwick (Lincolnshire).
Manuscript, c. 1938 and later?
4 volumes. Small 4to. Around 350 pages, mostly of manuscript notes, but some made up of pasted newspaper articles, with the addition of many original illustrations and hand-drawn maps by the author. As a collection, almost certainly unique.
Sydney Morle, a local schoolteacher, originally wrote some of these notes for publication in the ‘Scunthorpe and Frodingham Star’, and parts were later published as a small booklet in 1939. Copies of the the original manuscript notebooks were presented to West Butterwick Parish Church [note to front of two of these manuscripts], although two of these seem to be unique, being neither printed in the newspaper, nor copied and presented to the church.
One volume deals entirely with the “Industries of West Butterwick - Past and Present”, another with the history “in very remote times”, a third starts with “Amusements” and also covers church and parish history.
