Book Description
Plan de la Ville de Paris by Girard engraved by Vicq, published by Goujon, Paris 1826. A folding map on linen in 50 sections, size 100 by 60 cm. Scale 300 metres to the inch, with another scale in toises. Full title adds the description ‘ divisé en 12 Arrondissements, 48 Quartiers, Indiquant tous les Changements faits et Projetés’. Each of the two sides of the map has a list and index of all the streets of the city- somewhere in the region of a thousand places- and above the map are statistics on the size of Paris. Folds into original slipcase with the signature of the original owner J F W Herschel on a label to the front of the case. Herschel was the son of William Herschel and a noted astronomer, scientist and pioneer of photography. He visited Paris and received honours from the French Academy of Science. A detailed map in Good to VG condition. Slipcase sympathetically repaired.
