Book Description

PALMER, Samuel. The Eclogues of Virgil. An English Version. With Illustrations by the Author. Edited by A.H. Palmer. London: Seeley & Co, 1883. First Edition. Folio. Collates: [ii] xv, pp102. Bound in original vellum, gilt lined and with gilt to the spine. The title-page is printed in red and black. Complete with all 14 plates as called for including five original etchings and nine reproductions from drawings by Palmer. Top edge gilt. There is slight foxing to endpapers and page edges are lightly toned. Overall a Near Fine copy, inscribed in 1886 to F.W. M[ unreadable] "on his leaving Eton with all best wishes" as a gift from I Martin [Machin?] . Of the 5 original etchings, only one was completely finished by Samuel Palmer, before his death [ "Opening the Fold" or "Early Morning"], the other four were worked up to completion by his son A. H. Palmer. It seems possible to us that these volumes might have been bound in vellum as gifts to Eton leavers, as we are aware of another copy in similar vellum with and inscription to a pupil leaving the school. Rare in the vellum binding and in this condition.
