Book Description
Printed by Simmons and Kirkby, Canterbury, 1799, 1st edition. Rebound quarter leather with marbled boards. Six raised bands to spine. Gilt lettering on red leather patch to compartment two. Gilt Kent heraldic horse symbol to other compartments. All edges uncut. Folio, 18ins x 11ins, iv, (ii), 396pp, 20pp (indices, additions and corrections), 1pp list of plates plus folding plan of Canterbury and 9pp plates. Also 12 illustrations within the text, making the total of 22 illustrations as listed. There is also an illustration of the South Prospect of the Cathedral (p110) which is not listed. The plates are slightly smaller than the bound volume (16ins x 9.25ins) suggesting that this is probably a large paper copy. Map has an old tape repair to verso. Occasional offsetting to text page opposite illustrations, but generally a VG clean copy. Previous owner's bookplate to front free endpaper. Scarce in its original format.
