issued as an extra supplement to the Illustrated London News, a panoramic view of the Moorish palace on the north bank of the Seine, forming one of the focal points of the Exposition Universelle of 1878, the other being at the Champ de Mars. The event was on a scale never seen before, covering over 270,000 square metres, and was intended to celebrate the vigorous recovery of France after the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. Among the many exhibits were Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone, Thomas Edison’s phonograph and megaphone, Henry Steinway’s grand piano, and Auguste Mouchot’s use of solar power to drive a steam engine and to create ice. The Trocadero was 76 metres tall, and stood until 1937. Although not hown in this view, the head of the statue of Liberty was displayed in the surrounding gardens to help raise funds for the forthcoming gift of the French nation to the United States
